My personal Blog.
A must have when studying at University of East London apparently
Definition : The theory and study of signs and symbols, especially as elements of language or other systems of communication, and comprising semantics, syntactic, and pragmatics.
Semiotics covers a wide range of things from type, imagery communication and many more things from the text prefix of WWW. To the worldwide known image of a bike.
I look as semiotics a way of communication with people with many different ways, from picture books to icons, semiotics seems to keep things quick and fast as such the message can be understood as quickly as possible.
When studying my foundation I drafted up the rule that is the messages could not be understood within 20 seconds then the message had lost it’s selling power.
This is the same for semiotics, what would the point be if you could not understand a road sign. In most cases you can remove the text from a road sign, bike crossing, school coming up.
Another part of semiotics that I have studied back in 6form was with the use in IT, semiotics = standardization, this is best shown on a Microsoft computer. Every computer having the start menu, file, edit, view etc.. Every program has set points where factions will be in place, this has worked so well with the release of vista and other resent software the names have disappeared and are just using the icon’s e,g. Start button has gone from Start to “Logo” Start to now just “Logo”.
From this definition standardization to me = semiotics more today than the other way.
